Uploading the Footage!

Since filming we have uploaded our footage into the editing suite and began to edit it!
We have decided to Edit alongside filming, to make our time more progressive, i produced a new media schedule to adapt to our new arrangements. We especially did this to keep our time management on track.

Below is example of us keeping to our schedule in lesson times, as we continue to edit our footage of the white room scene.  Also we have been experimenting with potential effects and edits we could potentially use within our footage:

Filming Part One

Filming day was a lot of fun. We began by setting up, this included; placing props down for example the white sheets to cover the grey flooring and getting the model (Amelia) ready with her outfit and make up.

Once set up we then got the filming on the way, here are some photos from the event!

Preperation For Filming

Now we had permission to film, we had to set about finding props and materials to make the whole thing happen. Both me and my partner Amelia spent the evening, going through our wardrobes trying to find a suitable outfit, these are images of our costume attempts:

We sent each other the images and then came to a compromise and decided to put my black leather jacket with Amelia holey leggings as the final outfit.

Moving on to Hair and Make up:

We wanted to create a fierce, messy, rock chick affect with the hair and with the make up we wanted dark heavy eye make up. Inspiration we found for this was images such as;

Location Number One: The White Room

We wanted to start are filming soon, so we continued our research into locations. We found a very convient location with access to a white backing wall, which we were inspired to use by beyonce's sweet dreams video. We found our school stage met the requirements we were looking for. We explored it more, took photos on our phones to see if the wall would come out like we wanted and then went to get permission to use it. We visisted the site team, and they said it was absolutely fine to use the stage for filming in a lunchtime.

Storyboard.

To put our ideas into perspective, we created a storyboard. We started by doing the first part of the music video really accurate in terms of shot sequence and timing, as we figured that would be the most important be to get right and then the rest of the video would lead on from the start.

Thought Splatter!

Once deciding on the locations and themes we wanted to include in our video, i listened to the song to try and piece together the structuring of the video. with this i set out a very brief overview of what the storyboard would look like.

Close up of lead singer
Train scene
Flash back between trains and band
Far distance (CCTV footage of girl)
Quick head glance
Disturbance at station
Head shot of girl
Shots of band
News headline
White room (for chorus) (with capturing outfit and heels, scarf)
Flashes of disturbances
Prostitute looking and smoking
Living room set outside
Newsreel
White room
Flashbacks to more disturbances
Band shots
Quick flicking shot between the main character in London and in the white room
Girl begins running
Then box type editing to reveal
Band members running (but all in different locations)
Finishing with Main character crawling back into her scarf ( to match the lyrics 'i just can't breathe at all')

Further Ideas

Further ideas/locations/settings/actions we want to include in our video

- A living room set but moved outside
- Within this want to include a TV, (giving out headlines to do with a bad society)
- Band shots with a dark background and heavy spot lights
- Fights between random members of public, to suggest the idea that society has bad bits to it
- Train scene, of trains flashing by main character
- A series of people running, to create a split box type edit

Inspriation!

Our inspiration to use the plain white room with a female character in eye capturing outfit, came from the music video Sweet Dreams by Beyonce.

I found this was very successful, especially through the use of the outfit, and how it draws the most attention from the white room setting. This made us think about the important of a captivating costume in our video.
Also within this music video, i like the way the main character has interactive with the interior, for example banging and touching the walls, using it as a prop. I want to achieve this within our video, as i think it highlight this sense of isolation.

Break Through! plus music video research

Ideas sorted!
From my music video research, where i discovered that 'most rock videos do not aspire to tell stories with beginnings, middles and ends, but instead impart meaning through visual collage. What makes a video memorable is not what happens but what it looks like. No attempt is made to convey a reality. instead videos are liberated into a timeless dreamworld'.

Its from this discovery/research that we decided to have less of a narrative within our video, to abandon creating a sense of reality and instead creating a collage of events through different visual settings and themes.

We decided to base the video around the themes that we felt the lyrics suggested. Particularly, the feeling of giving up, abandonment, frustration and hatred for society and its disappointments.

We decided on locations, such as London, the underground, train stations, streets. We also decided on more abstract settings like, a plain white room, and an outside living room setting. We felt this sort of mise en scene, would steer us away from typical narrative conventions.
We still decided to keep the idea of having a main female character throughout the whole of the film.

Lyrics and More Ideas

When we started to develop our initial ideas and think of ways into how we would actually film it, we realised that we had chosen an unrealistic idea for the video, especially concerning the weather conditions. Instead we needed more inspiration, for ideas that would be more successful and achievable. We did this by looking at the Lyrics of the song.

We'll break it all when you're here
Use your strength to hold me down
I won't cry at all, we know better
So much better than the sky we see today

This mind will never stay
So lets do this again, we'll do this again
And the colour fades away
And it's dark again, and it's dark again

It's all about the air we breathe
And I can't breathe at all, I just can't breathe at all
You will never see everything
So I don't care at all, I just don't care at all
So save yourself

It's where we are I can't see
Going back to change it all
Our brothers gone, left for nothing
Left for nothing than the sky along the way

This mind will never stay
So lets do this again, we'll do this again
And the colour fades away
And it's dark again, and it's dark again

It's all about the air we breathe
And I can't breathe at all, I just can't breathe at all
You will never see everything
So I don't care at all, I just don't care at all
So save yourself

And the colour fades away
And it's dark again, and it's dark again

It's all about the air we breathe
And I can't breathe at all, I just can't breathe at all
You will never see everything
So I don't care at all, I just don't care at all
So save yourself

It's all about the air we breathe
And I can't breathe at all, I just can't breathe at all
(So save yourself)
It's all about the air we breathe
And I can't breathe at all, I just can't breathe at all
(So Save Yourself)
You will never see everything
So I don't care at all, I just don't care at all
So save yourself

Organisation! & Planner

Now we had the bulk of our idea to help us plan our project better, we created a week by week planner, of what we hope to achieve in which week of working on the project. We felt this would improve our time management and scheduling. At this early stage of the project, this is a very basic planner, as we do not yet know what difficulties we will face when trying to produce out music video. See below:

Now we had permission to use the song, we now started diving into all the possible ideas we could come up with by using this song. We did this by listening to the song on YouTube and downloading it off iTunes.

Here is the song:

Our initial ideas when first listening to the song, were based around a girl on her own walking from different locations using fast cuts, to signify her loneliness after her break up with her lover. Ideas also evolved round the ideas of the main girl character, seeing mirrors wherever she went, which reminded her of her past relationship, which she then smashes up at the end, and throughout is running from them. Throughout all our different initial ideas, the idea of having a single main female character was in all of them, something we defiantly wanted to have within our video.

Getting Permission

Our first attempt to get in contact with the band was to email them through myspace. From doing our research, we knew they regualary updated and checked their account, so it looked like a possible way of getting in touch with them. We did, and we got lucky and got a reply!
